Introducing 2008-09 District Governor Tony Fryer and Sheryl

Tony Fryer, Sheryl Fryer, District 9940, Rotary International NZ

Tony joined the Rotary Club of Wellington North in 1990, and served as Club President in the 1995-96 Rotary year. He was appointed to the District Membership Committee in 1996-97 and was its Chair in 1997-98. Tony was then District Governor’s Representative for both DG Ross Murray (1998-99) and DG Lindsay Knowles (1999-00).

Tony and Sheryl were transferred to Australia in 2000 where he joined the Rotary Club of Canberra, where he served on the Board for 3 years. A cross-posting to the UK followed in 2003. He continued his Rotary involvement as a member of the Rotary Club of Cheltenham. Tony and Sheryl returned to New Zealand (and Wellington North) in September 2005.

Born and educated in Otago, Tony served in the Royal New Zealand Air Force for 26 years with postings to Auckland, Wellington, Singapore (twice), Seattle USA, and Christchurch where he “retired” as Commanding Officer of the Base Wing RNZAF Base Wigram in 1989. Tony then joined the Government Communications Security Bureau as a Divisional Director. He was later seconded to the NZ High Commission in Canberra and subsequently London where he served in the diplomatic rank of Counsellor.

Tony is now the Executive Director of the NZ-UK Link Foundation, based at the British High Commission in Wellington, where his role is to facilitate and manage the linking the best of New Zealand and the UK, through a series of Fellowships and exchanges between the two countries. Sheryl is a Past-President of the Inner Wheel Club of Wellington, and served as a committee member of the Women’s International Club in Canberra, and the Anglo-American Club in Cheltenham. Tony and Sheryl have two adult children, Karen and Blair, both of whom live in Wellington.
